High Resolution Oesophageal and Pharyngeal Manometry has landed at MSAC! This new swallowing diagnostic tool represents state-of-the art practice in the complete dysphagia management. Not only does it provide established oesophageal functional analysis, which is more widely available, it brings with it exciting opportunities for pharyngeal analysis, the first of it’s kind in Victoria.
Melbourne Swallow Analysis Centre commences a regular stand-alone swallow diagnostic service for referring clinicians.
Whilst MSAC is now 2 and ½ years old, and in that time has been providing a comprehensive multi-disciplinary consultative and treatment service for swallowing disorders, we have always wanted to be able to provide stand-alone swallow diagnostic tests to patients, where the answer to a particular diagnostic question is all that is requested/required.
Does my patient have Laryngopharyngeal Reflux ? Pepsin Testing Service & 24 hour dual probe pH/Impedance LPR monitoring
With the increasing concern regarding the side effects of long-term Proton Pump Inhibitors, and more recently, ranitidine, there is an increasing need and role for objective reflux testing, as many patients and prescribers are reluctant to commit to long-term anti-reflux medication on clinical grounds alone. Gastroscopy and nasendoscopy are not reliable diagnostic tests for
Claire Stanley, one of our MSAC Speech Pathologists, recently presented her research at the Asia- Pacific Frontiers of Laryngology Conference in Singapore. Her research study investigated the use of Narrow Band Imaging (NBI) to detect aspiration during Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES). The conference was well attended with 335 delegates from 32 countries.
Given the growing concern regarding the long-term side effects of Proton Pump Inhibitor Medication use, and the introduction of new reflux testing technologies such as Oral Salivary Pepsin Enzyme testing, and pharyngeal 24 hour pH impedance probes, the Melbourne Swallow Analysis Centre is currently actively recruiting patients for a prospective study comparing the gold
